How to Manage Fear of Injections: A Structured Technique

The reduction routine

1. Same time, same setup, every time.
Do each of your injections at the same time each evening, aim for the same spot, with the same steps in the same order. Laying out your pen, your alcohol wipes, the sharps bin, before you begin. Predictability for an anxious mind reduces anticipatory anxiety more than almost anything else, creating your ritual itself becomes a signal to your nervous system that this is a known, this is a ver manageable event.

2. The 60-second countdown.
In the minute before, breathe in for four, out for six, four times. (The Injection Breath) Then do the injection on the exhale of the fifth breath, not before you feel “ready” waiting for a type of readiness to arrive on its own will extend the anxious anticipation rather than resolve it.

3. A fixed after step.
Have one small, consistent thing you do right after every injection, a yoga stretch, a sip of water, marking it off on a tracker app. This closes the loop clearly for your wonderful , so your mind registers, that’s done now, rather than staying wired for longer than it needs to be.

Why this works

Uncertainty is a large part of what makes the needle anxiety worse over your week cycle, not knowing exactly how the next injection will go (they 90% of the time go just fine BTW). A fixed routine removes as much of that uncertainty as possible, with the same time, the same steps, same after celebration. Timing the injection to a breath rather than to a feeling also avoids the common trap of any anxiety driven procrastination you might have, where waiting to “feel ready” makes the anticipation longer, not shorter.

The Injection Routine session runs the 60-second countdown with paced breathing, so you have something to follow in the moment rather than counting on your own.

If needle anxiety is significant for you

This structure helps many people, but if injections are causing significant distress most days, it’s worth mentioning this to your clinic. some IVF clinics offer additional support, and there’s no reason to manage a genuinely difficult symptom alone for your entire stimulation phase. Reach out…
