Two week Wait

Acupuncture Support After Embryo Transfer

TL;DR: Fertility Acupuncture during the two week wait focuses on calming the nervous system in the days after transfer, typically with one or two acupuncture sessions. Many patients find it genuinely helps with any anxiety of the wait itself. Patients typically experience a few symptoms post embryo transfer and with this it brings a little bit of stress and anxiety and please remember this is all normal. The most important thing here is to not stress about the stress as you are doubling the stress, we joke in clinic its better to just be stressed and get it all out of your system.

So honestly, how are you supposed to get through the two weeks without analysing every twinge, every symptom, every minute of your day? The wonderful amazing two week wait is often described as the hardest part of the entire IVF process and not because of what your body is doing, but because of what your mind won’t stop doing. And that is the wonder of being human, just remember you are not a robot….

What’s actually happening in your body during this window

After transfer, there’s genuinely very little to do medically, except to continue to take your medication prescribed, the wait exists because implantation and early development simply take time to happen, usually within 48 hours of transfer and then it takes usually 10-12 days to show up on the test. That space between ‘ your medical part being done’ and ‘the outcome’ is exactly where most of the emotional weight of IVF comes from. Its the countdown and it can hit hard. So please be gentle with yourself at this time.

Where acupuncture fits and where it doesn’t fit.

It’s important to be straightforward about this: acupuncture during the two week wait isn’t going to change whether implantation happens. What it can do is support you…. through a window of you life and IVF journey that is really hard, our experience shows how it can make the worst two weeks of someones life into the most amazing. I know this sounds crazy when I say it out loud. The one thing I will say is that you have done everything medically, right. Its now time to take care of you, your health and wellbeing, emotionally and physically and thats where we are amazing at what we do. Helping to calm a nervous system that’s often running on high alert, and giving you a small amount of structure and care in two weeks that can otherwise feel overwhelming. 23 years of experience brings with it a knowledge that can’t be read out of a book.

What to expect from a two week wait session at Aculife

These sessions are more important than earlier cycle acupuncture treatments. The focus is about nourishing calm and settling the nervous system, enhancing the reproductive system, not an active protocol you might experience during the stimulation phase of your IVF. Each phase of your IVF cycle requires a specific treatment approach, no one will have the same treatment, unlike the (outdated approach) Pre and Post Acupuncture treatments that havent changed for decades, I dont mean to go on a rant here, but if you know me Im not a massive fan of the outdated Paulus Protocol, for pre and post acupuncture, lets be honest this needs to be an onsite IVF treatment within the IVF clinic right after transfer, you shouldnt have to be racing to and from you IVF clinic, through traffic, trying to find parking and hoping your acupuncturists gets back from lunch on time…….

Getting through the wait, beyond acupuncture

Acupuncture sessions are one or two points in your IVF journey, its not the full picture in a two week stretch, most of the wait happens outside the treatment room, at home, at work, at 3am when your mind won’t switch off. We find it helps to have something for those in between moments to bring you back to sanity, it sounds simple however a short breathing practice or guided meditation built specifically for this stage of an IVF cycle can be useful alongside acupuncture, if you dont have access to a qualified fertility acupuncturist. If it’s helpful, Mindful IVF has guided sessions built around exactly this phase of the cycle. Yes, a subtle pitch on my part… 🙂

When to test, and what your acupuncturist won’t tell you

However tempting it is to ask, we shouldn’t and can’t tell you what the result is going to be. Honestly, nobody can, and any suggestion otherwise, run…. What we can do is support you through the waiting itself, for whatever the outcome turns out to be.

Frequently asked questions

Can acupuncture during the two week wait affect implantation?
There’s no reliable evidence that it changes the biological outcome. Its value in this window is in supporting calm during a highly stressful wait, not in influencing implantation itself.

Should I stop acupuncture during the two-week wait?
No, many patients continue with gentler sessions through this period. It’s a good time to talk to your acupuncturist about adjusting the focus of treatment.

How many sessions do I need during the wait?
Usually one or two, depending on how you’re doing, this isn’t a period that calls for an intensive schedule.

Is it normal to feel this anxious during the two-week wait?
Yes, entirely. It’s consistently described as one of the hardest parts of the IVF process, and the anxiety itself doesn’t mean anything is wrong.
